Went out in the afternoon to sweat out some Zombies and Wondrous Punches. Actually, I only drank beer the night before, but the same can't be said about the Staties. Lushes. We tried Mr. F for the first time this year, fishing downstream from the takeout so we could be assured no criminal charges would be filed by canoe/kayak type people.

The weather couldn't decide what it wanted to do, alternating between sunny and overcast, with the occasional drop of rain (until it briefly poured when we got back to the car).

I had a good time fishing the rock wall area, pulling fish out with a large stone fly nymph. I hit a deep area of the run and landed a nice 15"er. Fruit Booter stole Scotty's fish, and a couple others were landed by the group.

We had an emergency meeting of the Fly Angler's Guild to discuss Quickdraw's membership status in light of recent inflammatory statements. The findings of the review board will be released within the next few weeks.

Warwick Davis: 1 - Xan: 0

Date: March 24th, 2007
Location: Warwick Davis (3 spots, including the park)
Air temp: mid 60s
Water temp: 41ish
Hatches: a few little black flying things
Fish landed: skunk!

What a shitty day. I rank this as my third worst day of fishing. Checked out the Warwick to find it a bit cold (41 compared to 47 at the Curd the day prior) and running a little stronger than normal.

I went to three different spots, didn't see a damn fish anywhere. At the third spot, in the park, I decided to cross the river to hit a deep run. Let's just say I didn't judge the crossing very well and I became one with the current.

After filling my waders to the knees, I called it a day. I blame Jazz Hands for giving me a pair of shitty waders that have a huge hole at the top.

Muddy Clubs and Lobster Tails

Date: March 23rd, 2007
Location: Club
Air temp: mid 60s
Water temp: 47ish
Hatches: a few little black flying things
Fish landed: 3 (brown)

Quickdraw and I went out to the club at the Curd River on a sunny Friday afternoon. We decided to fish the area far downstream from the club, and found a few decent runs and pools.

I was able to land a couple 13"s and an 11" on nymphs, while Quick did well (5-6) on a dry. Fish were rising with some frequency.

The real highlight came afterwards. Deciding to change it up a bit, we skipped the regular pilgrimage to the EPB&G (blasphemy!) and tried a new place out, Shady Grove.

Wow, talk about high rollin'. We were treated to a nice little restaurant with fine food and curds! I supped on lobster tail with a nice Pinot Noir, while QD had the fettuccine. The curds were beer battered, and were fluffy on the outside, squeaky on the inside. Delish. If we can only convince them to make a spicy version and get some pull tabs, the EPB&G's days may be numbered. You read it here first.

Well, it was a tough day out on the river we got out there sometime around the azz crack of 11 o'clock, it's still a bit fuzzy, we started on the upper river. We were expecting to avoid crowds and pick up a few quality fish. Well at least we avoided the crowds in that spot. We pounded the riffle with everything we had. After that didn't work we pounded the Scotch in honor of St. Patrick. He must've driven all of the trout out of the upper river. After Hitting the sauce for a bit we decided that it was time to move on to the canyon because we knew that there was trout to be had there and the crowds wouldn't be too bad.
Scooter Enjoying a Fine Backwoods Cigar

When we got there we realized that we were wrong, more people than trout. walked all the way down to Alpha fished some good looking spots mainly with a San Juan worm(figuring that San Juan is a compadre with St. Patrick and that he might put in a good word for me), no dice. So with the Yetti and scooter on their way home and me and tim still with the skunk on our backs we decided at the Alpha to make the move to the crossroads. it was a long walk back to the cars and about a half an hour ride to crossroads.

We hit the water at crossroads at about 4 and were pleasantly surprised to only find one car and one guy fishing there. I was worried that we'd go all day without catching a fish, but I think San Juan finally worked his mojo with St. Patrick and
I got my first strike of the day. the fish put up quite a fight, it was my fists fish on the 3wt line and it was a blast. shortly after I caught this fish the other fisherman decided to leave so we had the whole spot to ourselves, and we decided to move down river to the spot where I caught my first trout. Tim ended catching a nice one on his streamer, which was cool. With the sun getting low the big ones started to rise, I tied on a tan Caddis hoping that the luck o' the Irish would bring me a top water strike, but it was not to be. me and Tim each left with one fish on the boards for the day, but it could have been worse.
First fish on 3Wt.

The water conditions were not ideal yet, the water was still pretty brown but I thought we'd have a chance at more fish than we did. The river has changed a lot since the big flood, some of my favorite spots are no longer any good, but it looks like there will be some different favorite spots by the end of the summer.

(went fishing with a spin caster)

Today the "water" was piled high and deep with a light froth on top.
It looked like some thick azz chocolate milk.

The Quick thaw has totally blown out the canyon and the curd river,
It will probably be at least a week till things return to normal levels.
The water rose sharply today, we could see the levels rising on the pylons of the bridge in the unincorporated town.

the coolest event of the day, was checking out some new spots that I've driven by but never tried, They should be interesting once the rivers settle down a bit.

no trout to be had, although Mark(the spin caster) claims he heard a trout.
hmmmmmm.

Hit the Hardware store to stock up on plenty of flashbacks.

The daylight savings time change and large quantity of beer from the night before a bleary morning make. After releasing the hounds twice, the second time at Dick's gas station bathroom, resulting in the inevitable, "mean cup of mud," some stream time was much needed.

A busy day on the Canyon saw many fishers and an armada of canoes. Fruit showed off some late drift skills learned from the Brule and landed a couple of nice trout on the San Juan worm.

Scooter christened his new 3wt with a solid brown at the Beta Hole.

More sun, less snow, (King Of) beer(s) (great call by Tim), and gin clear water greeted us at the Bridge. It was another slow day, but I was able to pull out a nice 14"er.
Tim landed the first Brookie of the season. Quickdraw once again had good results with the Bugger.

Another great call by Tim was to wedge our (fly) rods underneath the windshield wipers of the Saturn as we drove to the Club, after exhausting the Bridge spots. Even at speeds of 50mph, the (fly) rods didn't budge.

After landing some tiny trout and flipping some others with a streamer, we headed for the EPB&G to cap off the expedition with some curds.

We received a cellular
communiqué from the knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers (KDMB) that they landed a bevy of trout in a separate trip elsewhere on the stream. Sadly, their ilk, with their "power" worms and ape-like shuffle, may never realize that while they "caught" a lot of trout, none of them counted.

Day 2 of opener was much like day 1. Lots of snow, slow fishing, but nice to be out. A couple fallen trees in the Alpha Hole have changed its drifts. Water levels looked good and the water was fairly tinted. Quickdraw killed them with buggers and large nymphs. No one had much luck with small nymphs, but #12s seemed to attract a strike or two.

"Good, our first catch of the day." 2007 Opener

Date: March 3rd, 2007
Location: The Original Spot
Air temp: mid 20s (I think)

Hatches: nope
Fish landed*: 1 (brown)

Like Christmas morning or the day you get your nitrous tank refilled, Wisconsin inland trout opener is a magical time. The first day of the fishing season is usually memorable, even if the events that unfold are not. It is dreamt of for 5 months. It is especially longed for when the last of those months turns out to be unfuckingbelievably cold. The promise of a new year of fishing and spicy cheese curds embiggens the occasion, if you will, with a spirituality and jalapeño zestiness that no other fishing trip of the year can match.

There are other small but nifty perks to the day. The trails are the clearest they will be all season. The fish, who haven't seen a fly or lure in months, are as dumb as they'll be all season. However, if there is a foot of snow on the ground, the water is clear and the sun is shining, both of those perks disappear right quick.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day to open 2007. Blue skies, snow everywhere, and only one car at the parking lot. Despite the mid 20 temps, the sun shine made the day quite bearable, though the fishing was slow. Here are some comparison shots:

Fruit Booter and myself both got on the board this fine day. Here is a look at Fruit Booter in action:

The snow made for a good workout, and ice shelves along the banks gave Fruity and Scooter a new game to play: "Let's see if we can break off chunks and send them floating down the river." Retards.

In other news, it was revealed that Fruit Booter was using a
flash back nymph. It was discovered by the keen eye of Scooter, while he was performing the Scooter Mac Memorial Walkaround (even though he is back, it is still a "Memorial" as he is dead to Fruiter). He claims he was just "curious," but seasoned Fly Angler Guilders know that those who malign something the most are only trapped in a closet of their own shame. The sub plots of the new season are already materializing.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to the EPB&G for the first spicy curds, pitcher of Miller Lite and burgers of the year. Their deep fryer is still in fine form. I broke even (total investment of $3) on pull tabs, and that, my friends, is the start of the season.

* Fish landed denotes only fish that I (Xan) caught. Don't let the others tell you how many they caught. They are degenerate liars, the whole lot of them.
